My Story
Sylvia Oloo graduated from Belmont Abbey College in North Carolina back in 2009 in the United States, with a Bachelor of Science degree in Biology. She then got a Certification in Nursing and after working in the science field decided to pursue her passion in the arts. She created the brand Spinkly Creations in 2012. Spinkly is the brand which Sylvia uses to name her creations. It means 'great' or 'fantastic' according to the urban dictionary and she got the name from playing around with the words 'Sly (Which is her nickname)' and 'Pink (One of her favorite colors)'. Spinkly was first represented by the ‘Spinkly Magazine’ which was an online magazine for women. It was a stunning, vibrant and fresh magazine which inspired and touched on the core issues which women faced. Sylvia then received a Higher National Diploma in 3D animation and multimedia in January of 2014 at Shang Tao Media Arts College allowing her to explore her passion and further her creativity skills in the arts. In September of 2014 Sylvia also began her career in publishing working at Storymoja Africa.
Sylvia worked with a great team of writers and editors on producing monthly content for her Magazine until August 2015. She owned a studio at the time and would do cover shoots for her models as part of her monthly issue magazine production. Along with the magazine, Sylvia was able to work in the publishing industry where she worked as a creative designer designing book covers and book layouts. You can check out the primary and secondary revision primary series ‘Score More’ to see some of her work. She gained experience working in the field of publishing up until September of 2015 where she decided to pursue a Masters in Graphic Design and Typography in the UK for a year.
Having lived in the UK for a year, in September 2016 Sylvia cleared her Masters studies in Graphic Design and Typography, and got her MA Degree. She returned to Kenya and began working as a freelancer in her field of Graphic Design on contracts with other companies. Start a Library, Hope for the girl Child and Orac Branding are some of the companies she worked with.
Sylvia publishes her first book ‘The Inevitable’ which is a fictional screenplay. On learning how to self-publish she helps other writers do the same. Among some of the Self Published authors is Atieno Songa the author of ‘Beyond the Crevices.’ Sylvia also publishes ‘Safi Misses The Bus’ which is the first of her children’s book series and ‘The Physical Escape’ another screenplay. Between 2017 to 2018 Sylvia worked at Bookhive Kenya which is a website that allowed people to access Kenyan books. Other than working on the website content, she also handled the social media pages for the company. In 2019 she co-founded the company Juza Africa, working as the creative director where she also ran the social media pages at the time. During the period that she worked with Juza Africa, she partook in the installation of 15 digital libraries across schools in Kenya together with the team helping unprivileged children gain access to books.
Sylvia’s main focus is to build the Spinkly Creations brand. She works as a freelancer for the company and is happy to collaborate with other companies as well to achieve their creative goals. One of Sylvia’s newest and major prides is her development in her digital art skills. She loves to showcase her work on her social media pages where you can now follow her development journey as linked on the site below. Support her by buying her products on the site that she has created. She envisions developing her own style in her work, one that stands out. She also hopes to change the perspective of the value of creatives and designers as she has found this to be one of her challenges which she faces working as a designer in her field.
